The Centerpoint recreation program is designed to offer each resident the opportunity to engage in physical activities that are enjoyable, promote health and well-being, and support the development and enhancement of self-worth. Emphasis is placed on participation and enjoyment. Instruction in various techniques and skills is provided for each resident by residential staff who assist in planning and engaging in the team play. Residential staff serve as models for socially acceptable, supportive group interactions.

Because Centerpoint has access to a secure recreational area, even those residents who demonstrate a risk for unsafe behaviors are able to participate actively in these daily recreational activities. In addition, those residents able to safely participate in community activities can access community resources in supervised groups including hiking paths, softball fields, football fields and basketball courts. Centerpoint frequently schedules elaborate off-grounds activities that are offered to residents who have demonstrated an ability to modulate unsafe behaviors. This include deep sea fishing trips, whale watches, snow skiing, trips to water parks and carnivals.

Individual recreation time is built in to the daily schedule to allow residents to pursue personal interests and hobbies. Unstructured time during the day encourages residents to develop individual interests and socialize with peers on a relaxed, informal level. Residents learn to manage their own time and occupy themselves in an environment that promotes and supports individual preference. Periodically, clinical, residential, educational and administrative staff join the residents in an “all unit activity” to promote a sense of community within the program.
